What is the Mediterranean diet?

The Mediterranean Diet is a way of eating based on the countries that border the Mediterranean like Greece and Italy. It focuses on vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds, and olive oil.

The foundation of the diet is plant-based, not animal protein-based. Consumption is as follows:

  • Daily: 
    • Vegetables
    • Fruits
    • Whole grains
    • Healthy fats (olive oil, nuts, seeds)
  • Once a week:
    • Fish
    • Poultry
    • Beans
    • Eggs
  • A few times a month:
    • Dairy
  • Limited: 
    • Red meat

Why Eat This Way?

Doctors noticed that people were living longer and more healthy lives in this region. After further study, they noticed that their diets reduced heart disease and prevented chronic diseases.

One of my primary priorities is having a lifestyle positioned for longevity. I have family members who have gone through cancer, open heart surgery, and many of them have died from chronic disease. Having experienced that first-hand, I want to do everything I can to prevent going through these medical issues myself. And if it takes eating more vegetables and limiting meat, I’m in!
